The Omega-3 Revolution

How a UK-grown crop is changing the face of omega-3 nutrition

One of the most robust and well-researched fields in nutrition is omega-3 health. As scientific understanding deepens, so too does consumer demand for a daily omega-3 supplement.  The benefits of omega-3 fatty acids are wide-ranging and well-documented, from supporting brain function, mood and learning, to improving cardiovascular health, lowering triglycerides, and reducing systemic inflammation.

Until recently, much of the focus has been on marine sources such as fish oil. In 2022 alone, global fish oil production reached 1.25 million metric tons, sourced largely from anchovies, sardines, herring, and other small fish. The main producers include Vietnam, Chile, Norway, and Peru.  While effective, fish oil is increasingly criticised for being environmentally unsustainable, with growing concerns over marine ecosystem disruption and varying quality standards in production.

The urgent need for sustainable alternatives has never been greater.

A Sustainable Solution

A Sustainable Solution

Enter Ahiflower® the British superhero crop transforming the omega-3 landscape.

Grown by regenerative farmers right here in the UK, Ahiflower® is a native plant with a uniquely potent fatty acid profile that sets it apart from other plant-based omega oils.  Most plant-based omega sources, like flaxseed or hemp, contain ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), which the body struggles to efficiently convert into EPA and DHA, the "intelligent fats" found in fish oils. The issue lies in the conversion of ALA to SDA (stearidonic acid), a crucial intermediary step.

Ahiflower®, however, is naturally rich in SDA, bypassing the rate-limiting step and making it vastly more efficient at delivering the omega benefits traditionally associated with fish oil, all without touching the oceans.  This makes Ahiflower® the most advanced and effective plant-based omega oil available, a true "fish oil from the soil."

A Big Win for British Farmers This omega-rich crop isn't just a win for health and sustainability, it’s a victory for British agriculture.  Incredibly, just one acre of Ahiflower® produces as much omega-rich oil as 550,000 anchovies, without the bycatch, carbon footprint, or ecological damage. This marks a powerful shift in how we source essential nutrients and puts British regenerative farmers at the forefront of this new era in nutrition.  In January 2025, Regenerative Omegas was launched into small, independent health food shops across the UK, proudly offering soft-gel capsules made from pure British-grown Ahiflower® oil. Just this year, the product won “Best Supplement 2025” at the Natural Health Trade Summit, a landmark moment for the brand and for regenerative British farming.
